It's that time again! [personal profile] ceitfianna's picked some of my icons for me to explain, and once I'm done you can have me pick some of your icons!

This is Crossgen Comics' Sigil. More accurately, it's the standard version of the old-school Sigil; they seem to have changed things significantly with the Marvel reimagining, and even in the original run there were variants like Mordeth (all red) and Samandahl Rey (kind of pitted and scarred). The Sigil, in-universe, marks characters who are granted superpowers. Sephie, for instance, can use telekinesis (including to fly) and heal and encourage growth; Brath can understand any language; there was a guy whose name I can't remember for sure who could pilot any air- or space-craft. The yellow and red represent (among other, similar pairs) creation and destruction, and also the Dexter and Sinister Houses of the First (gods, basically, who believe they created the universe, and are quite confused when the Sigil-Bearers show up as they had nothing to do with making them. They get rather alarmed when it turns out that Sigil-Bearers can suck the power out of First with a touch). Crossgen is the only comics company I've ever had a particular emotional investment in.

This is Toph, from Avatar: The Last Airbender. She's one of my favorite characters, along with the Wise Old Mentor/Kooky Old Guy character Iroh. Toph is quite fond of saying that she's the greatest earthbender in the world, and there's very little reason to doubt her in this. She's able to effortlessly beat large numbers of attackers, due in part to her ability to "see" through the earth beneath her feet. She also manages to invent a way to bend metal, which had been presented as simply impossible before. Toph's awesome.

I am not absolutely certain, but it's possible this is one of my oldest icons. I know I had "Felix" and "maaaaagic cat" before that, because both of those are from my first Milliways run and I didn't start collecting unrelated icons until afterward, but apart from that it may have been one of the first I saved. The character in question is Kain Highwind (see [personal profile] baron_dragoon), and it's fairly representative of his attitude. I don't get a lot of use out of this one these days, on account of I'm trying not to think of people as stupid, so I may well phase it out at some point.

This icon is a variation on a common quote in the Young Wizards book series. When wizards meet each other on wizardly business, they often say "I am on errantry, and I greet you!" There are a few other variants - in book 5, for instance, Nita suspects that her school psychiatrist might be a wizard, so she asks him if he's on errantry. (For the record, his answer is "No. But I know some people who are.") I've loved these books for many years, since I picked up the fourth one by mistake in middle school. (For various reasons it's probably a good thing I started with 4; the first three were written in the 80s, and it shows; also, 4 probably has the deepest mythological elements, which was a very good way to appeal to me at the time even if it was a mythology I wasn't familiar with.)

This is Yellow Book, my "ponysona". They're fairly common in the brony community, but I held off on getting one for a long time. Part of the reason I finally did, actually, was the approach of the Season 2 finale. I have a variation where he looks angry and is holding a hoof up in the air that I was all ready to swap in if it seemed appropriate. Fortunately it didn't come to that, and I'm pretty happy with the finale as it stands in canon. He doesn't really look all that much like me, but then he does have a different number of legs and skeletal structure and so on. His name, for the record, is the name of a book of accounting auditing standards.
