What I believe, part 2
Feb. 24th, 2011 11:56 amThe second Article of Faith of the Church of Jesus Christ is as follows:
We believe that men will be punished for their own sins, and not for Adam's transgression.
This is, essentially, a refutation of the (completely non-biblical, by the way) idea of original sin. We aren't punished for what Adam did, only for what we do. Yes, Adam's actions led to the circumstances in which we find ourselves now, but so did our more recent ancestors' actions. And just as a fair legal system won't punish you because your great-grandfather was a bandit or a deserter, a just God won't punish you because your first ancestor disobeyed Him.
Now, what about the idea of not being punished at all? Well, for that we want the third Article of Faith. I expect there will be less of a wait before that one than there was for this.
As ever, please feel free to ask any questions you might have.
