From time to time I read Star Trek fanfiction. For the most part, this presents little difficulty. However, nuTrek complicates things in a couple of ways.

The majority of new Trekfic appears to be nuTrekfic. There is nothing wrong with this, although I often enjoy other iterations more. The problem comes with voices.

You see, when reading something with established, voiced characters I tend to hear the actors' voices speaking the dialogue. This gets quite interesting when reading fanfic focusing on character development, such as the Azula Trilogy. More relevantly, however, when I read Kirk-era Trek stories, I invariably hear the voices of William Shatner, George Takei, Majel Barret, and so on. Even if the story's nuTrek-based. (Curiously, with some effort I can make an exception for Spock, perhaps because I was familiar with Quinto's voice before I watched nuTrek.)
