I wonder... if I were to change the past so that I started watching My Little Pony now, with no prior knowledge thereof... would I see Pinkie differently?

As it stands, she's essentially the founding member (though not the first, chronologically, even in my experience) of a brain-category that has some relation to the "manic pixie dream girl" trope, but, well... the four foremost members of that category are Ty Lee of A:TLA, Pinkie Pie, Nora Valkyrie of RWBY, and Tess Fontana of Eureka. And the latter two are my current favorite members of their respective casts, whereas Pinkie is pretty near the bottom.

Don't get me wrong, I realize there are substantial differences between the four. And I don't see any way I could prefer Pinkie to Twilight, let alone Fluttershy. But it seems rather odd for the same brain-category of this type to contain both extremes.

I think I'll call it "six degrees of fandom". Name two canons (using as broad an interpretation of the term as you like), and I'll tell you in six steps or less how my headcanon links them. In the interest of fairness, only connections I've come up with before today will be involved.

As some of you may know, I'm a fan of the Rune Factory series. For those unfamiliar, this is a fantasy-themed spinoff of the Harvest Moon games, which takes the original's farming system and adds Zelda-like combat and a fantastic quest.

As I imagine you're not aware, unless you're really good at putting things together or you're a StE person (and I haven't noticed any of those subscribing to me here), I've recently become a fan of RWBY, Rooster Teeth's new project. Not long ago I wouldn't have imagined I'd be interested in any Rooster Teeth thing, but I digress.

As some of you have probably heard, I'm attempting to cultivate a Sazed headvoice. This has mostly involved reading and rereading all the Mistborn books over and over.

This post is not about Sazed, per se. But it is about Kelsier, and some things Sazed says about Kelsier, and about Vin, and it is inspired by adiva_calandia's last post. (Though don't worry; there are no Hannibal spoilers here.)

( There may be spoilers from some of Mistborn, and maybe other Cosmere books, though. I'm not sure yet where-all this will go. )

Dreams.

There are, according to our culture, certain "standard" dreams. Flying, falling, being naked in inappropriate places.

I don't remember many of my dreams, but I don't remember ever remembering having one of those. The dreams I remember remembering have much more bizarre topics. Like...

The One Where I Tried To Explain What I Meant By "I Am Harry Potter"
The One With The Hole In Snowy Ground, That I Couldn't Get Away From
The One With Murder And Ponies (though not, I think, murder of or by ponies) On A Lake
The One Where Rainbow Dash Raced A Series Of Video Game Characters One-On-One (I'm pretty sure Samus was cheating

And so on. Weird stuff. Dreamlike stuff.

I swear, it's a superpower.

It's been years since I tried for a username and found it already taken.

For "me" stuff, that's because I use my callsign, but even for character journals... littleboyof5 and spockambassador (the latter never used) on Livejournal were the only second-choice usernames I remember ever having to use. Meanwhile I've had venusadept_2 and jeanluc_1701 and baron_dragoon and needs_fern and seriallylucky and dalzoon and obstnatearth and lepata and magnetic_hair and even sunshine_celerystalks... I remember once registering nx_74205_a at Runescape...

And I've looked at a number of others without actually making the accounts; ican_fixit (Fix-It Felix Jr.), imgonna_wreckit (Wreck-It Ralph), and directive_classified (EVE) come to mind at the moment, though I know there have been others.

It's just... weird. But I'm willing to use it for good; if you want me to help you pick out a username, and I know the canon, feel free to ask me and I'll tell you the first thing that comes to mind. It should be available.

It seems I accidentally a plurk. Not sure it's really my thing, but it seems to serve savetheearth in much the same way AIM serves milliways_bar. So we'll see.

Of course, now I'm left with the same sort of "what now?" feeling I had when I got a facebook. And plurk doesn't even have Mousehunt.

Okay, this is fairly disconcerting.

So. You've got me. I don't swear.
You've got Felix. Felix pretty much doesn't swear; in all the time I've played him at Milliways, I can only recall him doing so twice.
Then... you've got seriallylucky. He's slated for savetheearth, which has as its premise that people from other universes have been reincarnated into this one, so they're basically human (or mundane animal) OCs based on their old selves who can gradually regain aspects of their previous incarnations. (There's some really fascinating stuff. No one I'm very familiar with except the brand-new Aragorn, but what the players of - particularly - Starscream and Her Imperious Condescension is quite worth watching.) So anyway. Fred here is Felix reincarnated.
And he swears. Bit of a pottymouth, actually; I have no idea where he gets it. I'm not entirely sure I want to app him like this, but I'm also not at all sure how to change him.

You know, sometimes I wonder about my brain.

So I've got Felix, yes? Simple guy, saved the world, all that jazz.
April of 2009, he shows up at milliways_bar over on LJ, from three parts of his life.
November of '09, a DE response crosses him over with Young Wizards.
Shortly after this, dalzoon is born, spinning off from that DE and becoming a separate (if quieter) headvoice. His surname is produced by running "Vale" and "son" through an online translator until I found a language where the combination looked like a surname. In Dutch, it did.
May of 2010, I post a picture with Felix in it to my deviantART gallery. Others follow, and "dA Felix" begins to gain presence in my mind. Not a voice, though; as a result of an idle comment about "eloquent body language", I think of drawn!Felix as entirely silent.
Early 2011 (I don't know for sure, but the relevant document was created that January), an attempt at porting the Golden Sun universe into the Homestuck universe produces variants of all the GS party members. obstnatearth results; his last name, Zoonderdal, was an attempt at rendering Dalzoon into three syllables. I have no idea if "der" would be appropriate. (This Felix's voice has not been very much heard for some time.
March of 2013, I forcibly pull myself out of an RP slump with a dear_mun post. This has the unexpected result of persuading a Sheba to come to Milliways. More relevantly, something about it hits me hard with the RP bug, as I begin investigating other games and even writing apps. One of these games, savetheearth, strikes me as a good place to send Felix, but it wants a native version thereof. I toy with the idea of adapting Felix Dalzoon, but decide to go a different route. The result is (or will be, once I put a little more effort into things) seriallylucky, Fred Vandenberg - whose surname is chosen solely because it's vaguely fitting and appears on a list of common Dutch surnames.

So. That's four separate journals, at least eight semi-distinct voices, all for essentially the same character. I blame you, Chanter.

(The best part doesn't even line up with the rest of it. You know one reason I'm glad I didn't try to port dalzoon? His occupation - high-school biology teacher - is already specifically taken by someone else in savetheearth. Talk about crazy random happenstance.)

You know what's sometimes really fascinating?

The "More Like This" box deviantART added to the side of picture pages a bit ago.

For instance. This is Ivan. I just saw a fanart of him for which that box featured several instances of the title character of Yotsuba&!. (Who, curiously, does share his daughter Karis' hair color. Is dA promoting crossover ships as backstory...?)

For another instance. Mudshipping, in Golden Sun fandom, is shipping of Isaac with Mia. I just saw a mudshipping fanart for which every picture in that box, except one, was Legend of Zelda fanart. I mean, yes, I can see some resemblance between Isaac and Link, and one of the Hylian goddesses has blue hair, but almost every picture?

I wonder what it looks at. I imagine the artist, and what else the artist has uploaded, plays a part, but clearly that isn't everything.

I really ought to be paying more attention to D_M. See, for instance, this post, made by Nowell from Golden Sun: Dark Dawn.

The post itself is nothing particularly unusual. What is unusual is the responses - or rather, the respondents. The post was tagged by five characters: Mia, Piers, Alex, Amiti, and Rief. With Nowell, this means every single canonical Mercury Adept showed up.

(In case anyone's curious: Yes, the icon's related. But probably not as directly as you might think if you recognize it.)

There is a discussion that periodically comes up, in various forms, at my primary My Little Pony thread. Every so often we get to discussing what is a masculine or feminine trait or activity, and what that does or should mean.

Today, it occurred to me to wonder how that discussion would be different if the people involved were speaking a language with gendered nouns. Arabic, Latin, German, French, Spanish - all the other languages I've studied or had significant exposure to use two or three genders, but not English. And I wonder how that affects this kind of discussion.

Caveat: Several of these in fact use the first two lines, on account of I don't like cutting off in the middle of a thought.
Additional warning: Two of these are probably not what you first think they are, even if you know the source material.

Thank you. Now. Obama has been elected before. This was, in fact, a contiguous reelection. He's not going to decide to suddenly make things worse now, any more than he decided to suddenly make things worse two years ago when various Senators and Representatives were replaced.

Also: whatever your politics, I'm sure you can agree that America has had less-than-stellar presidents in the past. It has survived. You know what it can't survive? This kind of partisan divisiveness. If I may borrow the words with which one great man paraphrased One even greater:

A house divided against itself cannot stand.

If half of us hate the other half, why are we together in the first place? Vote the candidate or the issue, but never vote for someone just because of their political party.

Well.

Back at the beginning of the semester, there was some kind of religious club giving away books on campus. Being who I am, I picked one up. Specifically, I got The Case for Faith, mostly because none of the others interested me apart from the C.S. Lewis one I already had a copy of.

Recently, I started reading it. And was disappointed. There just doesn't appear to have been a whole lot of thought put into it. The example that brought this home to me, for a variety of reasons, is as follows.

I really need to keep better control of my inputs and thought, and the collision thereof.

Also my computer is not helping.

So. A while ago, I started up this Sims game with the intention of getting a Felix and a Sheba together, preferably without the enormous tragedy that seems to happen whenever I try to fic that relationship.

More recently, I have been reading logs of various people's Sims Legacy Challenges (and variants). Given that the Legacy Challenge involves getting a family through several generations, these often involve proposals and marriages. And some of the writers are rather good at evoking emotion.

The last few days, I have also been trying to get an OOM written. It's from canon; specifically, the scene at the end of the first game where Felix is attempting to rescue Sheba on top of Venus Lighthouse.

So these have been colliding into periods of DO WANT, although I'm determined that certain things in the Sims game happen in a certain order. In particular, Sheba is not allowed to grow up just yet.

And then just now my computer decided to switch to this as its wallpaper. As I said, not helping.

Quite often, I enjoy having my mp3 player play all the tracks in alphabetical order. This can produce some very interesting effects - "Dulcinea (reprise)" goes straight into one of the boss battles from Zelda: Spirit Tracks, for instance. But I already knew about that one. Today I found a new amusing juxtaposition.

I know at least one of you will know exactly what I mean when I refer to "My Eyes are Fully Open", from Pirates of Penzance. The track on my player contains that song and the dialogue (trialogue? punctuated monologue? I'll just call it dialogue, even if talking to each other isn't exactly what happens...) that follows. In normal playthroughs, it is immediately followed by "Away, Away!" This morning, in the alphabetic play, it... was not. What followed it was, instead, "My Fluttershy". Which has just enough similarity in the opening notes to make it an absolutely hilarious follow-on.
