A Problem of Princesses, or, the Cadence Conundrum
Those of you who are not interested in My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic stuff may want to skip this post. It's pretty heavy-duty speculation, involving information both past and future.
Princess Cadence, one of the stars of the upcoming season finale "A Canterlot Wedding", presents a couple of problems.
First, she is an alicorn. Said variety of pony has only been known, previously, to include Princesses Celestia and Luna. This is not strictly damning, but considering those Princesses' position and power, it's a thing to keep in mind. Also it is interesting that an alicorn - implied to be immortal; Princess Celestia has lived over 1000 years, as did Luna (albeit trapped in the moon, and possibly in another persona) - would be marrying a unicorn, who has no such implication.
Second, she is apparently Celestia's niece. Now, there has only been one character referred to as Celestia's sibling - Luna, who has just returned from a millennium in the moon. We know little of pony growth rates, but it is wholly implausible that Luna would have had time to have a daughter, and for said daughter to grow to marriagable age, in the time since her return. Thus, either there is another unheard-of alicorn out there, or Cadence has been around since before Luna's banishment.
If the latter is the case, we are presented with more problems. First, Princess Luna was completely written out of the public consciousness, such that as of Anno Celestia 1000, Princess Celestia's personal student didn't recognize Luna, either by name or appearance. Furthermore, she seemed shocked at the information that Celestia had a sister (which, incidentally, hampers the another-alicorn hypothesis). That being the case, then, there wouldn't be anypony in the public eye presenting herself as Luna's daughter, or even as the niece of Celestia.
And if she's not in the public eye, why not? The previews don't indicate that she's out of favor with Celestia, but she doesn't have access to the Elements' storage chamber in Canterlot Tower...
It just doesn't make sense. Which may mean that she is, in fact, Discord.
