kd7sov: (Felix)
You know, sometimes I wonder about my brain.

So I've got Felix, yes? Simple guy, saved the world, all that jazz.
April of 2009, he shows up at [community profile] milliways_bar over on LJ, from three parts of his life.
November of '09, a DE response crosses him over with Young Wizards.
Shortly after this, [personal profile] dalzoon is born, spinning off from that DE and becoming a separate (if quieter) headvoice. His surname is produced by running "Vale" and "son" through an online translator until I found a language where the combination looked like a surname. In Dutch, it did.
May of 2010, I post a picture with Felix in it to my deviantART gallery. Others follow, and "dA Felix" begins to gain presence in my mind. Not a voice, though; as a result of an idle comment about "eloquent body language", I think of drawn!Felix as entirely silent.
Early 2011 (I don't know for sure, but the relevant document was created that January), an attempt at porting the Golden Sun universe into the Homestuck universe produces variants of all the GS party members. [livejournal.com profile] obstnatearth results; his last name, Zoonderdal, was an attempt at rendering Dalzoon into three syllables. I have no idea if "der" would be appropriate. (This Felix's voice has not been very much heard for some time.
March of 2013, I forcibly pull myself out of an RP slump with a dear_mun post. This has the unexpected result of persuading a Sheba to come to Milliways. More relevantly, something about it hits me hard with the RP bug, as I begin investigating other games and even writing apps. One of these games, [community profile] savetheearth, strikes me as a good place to send Felix, but it wants a native version thereof. I toy with the idea of adapting Felix Dalzoon, but decide to go a different route. The result is (or will be, once I put a little more effort into things) [personal profile] seriallylucky, Fred Vandenberg - whose surname is chosen solely because it's vaguely fitting and appears on a list of common Dutch surnames.

So. That's four separate journals, at least eight semi-distinct voices, all for essentially the same character. I blame you, Chanter.

(The best part doesn't even line up with the rest of it. You know one reason I'm glad I didn't try to port [personal profile] dalzoon? His occupation - high-school biology teacher - is already specifically taken by someone else in [community profile] savetheearth. Talk about crazy random happenstance.)

Ghhhhhhhhh

Oh, Brain.

Okay. So. Here's me, thinking about my Golden Sun Sims stuff. And it occurs to me that I ought to fold the laundry, so I go do that. I typically have my mp3 player on when I do the laundry. And today my sister was watching Serendipity in the next room at the same time.

Now. One of the major things I'm trying to do, in Sims, is to get Felix and Sheba to end up together without either of them dying or getting grievously injured or running off to wander the world in depression. So some of this is running through my head while I'm getting occasional glimpses of a romance movie - which I didn't actually like, what I saw of it, but that's beside the point. And the music on my player is from The Scarlet Pimpernel.

I believe I've mentioned a few times that my Felix headvoice, in some manners of speaking, handles incoming music. What I don't know that I've mentioned very much is that, for a long time, I was considering doing a Felix plot at Milliways based on Scarlet Pimpernel. So some of the songs, particularly Only Love, She Was There, and You Are My Home, are particularly associated with the Felix/Sheba ship. (Yes, I'm well aware that You Are My Home is sung by a pair of siblings. It has nevertheless always sounded like a romance song to me.)

So there I am, being bombarded three ways with roughly the same thing. I think I need a break; anyone willing to brainsit for me?

From [livejournal.com profile] bookelfe:

Go look at your blog. Find the last fandom-related thing you posted. The characters in that post are now your team-mates in the zombie apocalypse. How in trouble are you?

Well, now, let's see. My last fandomy post... was my very last post. In which I specifically mentioned Felix (and "even... the alternate Felixes"), Kain, Rose, Fluttershy, Applejack, Spock, and Karis. So let's look at the rundown.

Not bad, looks like. )
kd7sov: (hide)
I wonder how many people can legitimately say that the voices in their heads keep them sane?

It's odd to say, I know. But if one's definition of sanity includes understanding and being able to deal with other people, I'd say it's accurate enough for me.

Way back when I started at Milliways, I believed I played Felix basically as myself. This was not entirely true - I played him as somewhere between myself and his canonical self, with a few aspects from neither. Vestiges of this remain to this day. But it sort of set the stage for playing him as he actually is, and even more, hearing him. The Felix who lives in my head today may not be precisely the canonical Felix. But he specifically isn't me. He has different goals, motivations, and responses than I do. And because he isn't me, but I have access to his personality, I have that much more understanding of persons-other-than-me. It's no longer exactly trial and error - or it is, but without external consequences.

And the other voices I've picked up along the way - Kain, and Rose, and Fluttershy, and Applejack, and to a lesser degree Spock and Karis, and even the alternate Felixes - all help. They're at different degrees of not-me, but more importantly, they're in different directions. Even if Rose were more like me, she wouldn't necessarily be more like Kain. Spock isn't on the same line as Fluttershy, no matter what their respective 'distances'. And so on. Which means that I have more places I can look to figure out what people expect, and how they will react to whatever I do.

I still don't expect to ever be "normal", but because of headvoices I think I can fake it better than I used to.

My little sister has been making a plush version of Toothless, from How to Train Your Dragon. She finished it last night, and this morning I took a few pictures.

I have become convinced that Brain is taunting me. It started innocuously enough a few months ago, when I sort of started idly statting out Felix for Homestuck. All was fine for a while, until... someone posted this to one of the Golden Sun groups on deviantArt. Buried in there is a snippet that changes (inner) worlds: "[S] Ivan: Do the windy thing" Immediately, Brain started in on the parallels, and before long had decided that I needed to set up all sixteen party members from the Golden Sun games for Sburb sessions. Soon I had set up a spreadsheet with all the HS kids and trolls, their colors, titles, lands, and so on, and started in on the Sunnites. Now Brain has decided that I ought to set up Himi - the last person to join in Dark Dawn - as being related to Mary, from Harvest Moon: Friends of Mineral Town. Due to the rather twisted way Brain works, this would make her a one-person four-way crossover. (Because, you see, Mary entered the picture as another potential ship for the version of Felix in the Young Wizards 'verse, after I decided it would be too much trouble to make Sheba work both as a similarly-transplanted character and as a love interest for this Felix.)

And, as long as I'm here, [livejournal.com profile] ceitfianna has presented me with questions from the Interview Meme:

→ Leave a comment saying you want to be interviewed.
→ I will respond; I'll ask you five questions.
→ Update your journal with my five questions, and your five answers.
→ Include this explanation.
→ Ask other people five questions when they want to be interviewed.

Here's what she asked! )

... ... ...

Felix is arguing with The Man Your Man Could Smell Like, over in [livejournal.com profile] dear_mun. I suspect they won't come to an agreement, given that the topic under discussion is "what does a man smell like".

Possibly this should not amuse me as much as it does, but I'm not really one for scented product at all.
kd7sov: (Default)
Well. A week has passed since I last posted, and quite a week it's been.

I got Dark Dawn, and am pleased with it. Not pleased enough with aspects of the worldbuilding to retcon my millicanon enough to fit, but I enjoy the game. Now I'm debating whether to cultivate a particular proto-headvoice for Milliways or give Felix opportunity to meet her.

Thursday, though, was pretty bad. I spent most of the day in bed, throwing up. The next three-four days were spent with a throat full of sore, a head full of stuffed, and ears full of ache. Monday was borderline, and Tuesday I felt well enough to resume life.

Unfortunately, Tuesday was prone to network and scheduling problems. And ljlogin becoming broken, for no good reason I can find. So now I am finally able to return to my internets, catch up on my flist, and so on. This afternoon I think I'll EP with some advance setup for a Dark Dawn-inspired plot.

In the meantime, have a meme.

Ask me about any character, and I will tell you some combination of:

a) five facts about them from my personal fanon
b) two reasons they're amazing
c) five things I'd like to see happen to them
d) three people I might ship them with and why
or
e) if I don't know them, I will make something up

Obviously, characters you know I know are best, but I doubt there are many of those; as long as you avoid non-Ghibli anime and manga, I should be able to do at least e) above.

Oh, man!

Felix, why are you doing this to me? I don't want to see your far-future death, even if you die content. I especially don't want to see it this strongly. Why don't you show me pieces of your past, when you were happy, instead?

Tuesday of next week will be the Day.

I have managed to get representatives of Hewlett-Packard Company to send a replacement for my computer. A box in which to send back my current computer should arrive within 3-4 days, and once FedEx (probably) registers it as picked up the replacement will be shipped, with an expected travel time of another 3-4 days. So, by the fifteenth (eight days from now) I should have my new computer.

Also, next Tuesday is the first day of Electronic Entertainment Exposition 2010, and the day on which Nintendo gives its E3 press conference. If there is to be any information on Golden Sun DS, any at all, something more substantial than the dozen screenshots we have will be presented or otherwise made available on the fifteenth.

So. Big day next week.

Ahahaha!

When I'm making a picture in Inkscape, I tend to start from shapes or lines and modify them. This can sometimes produce... interesting results.

Take, for instance, something I'm doing that includes Felix. I had placed the head and facial features, and was working on the hair, when I noticed something odd about the way it looked.

Not exactly how Felix wants to look, I think.

I did it!

Some of you may recall the Milliways Charity Auction for Haiti, in relation to which I mentioned a picture involving Toph beating up Felix.

Well. I've finally managed to make it.

Ta-da! )

This is also a post to show off my new icon. You see, I worked on this picture from left to right, and before I put Toph in it looked like Felix had scored a critical failure on his earth-attack. For the record, I hate dealing with text in Inkscape.
kd7sov: (Felix)
I've said, a few times, that I don't actually get angst or depression.

Apparently, though, Felix does.

Cubefall's coming up, at Milliways, and for the last several months I've been OOMing a strung-together dream for Felix, more-or-less set to the first couple of verses of "At the Beginning". (Originally it was going to be the whole thing, but I fell behind.) This dream consists of flashbacks, might-have-beens, and other such things, relating to his relationship with Sheba.

Now, according to my millicanon, Sheba died a couple of years after the events of the games. Felix being who he is, this hit him pretty hard. I never quite realized how hard until today, when I typed up a segment of the dream dealing with her funeral. It's not overtly more intense than, for instance, what I posted as his "worst nightmare" some months ago, but what he was saying to me behind the words, behind the scene...
kd7sov: (Felix)
I've long been fond of the idea of dropping character X into canon Y, especially when both X and characters from Y can manipulate elements. In fact, one thing I'd like to do in [livejournal.com profile] mixed_muses at some point involves sticking Felix into the Avatar world and have him need to figure out how to earthbend. And yet...

I've been reading a particular Golden Sun fanfic in which, for reasons that are unclear to me, several party members decide to enter Colosso (an annual gladiatorial contest that features in the first game). One of the battles pits Felix against Piers, his party's water-manipulator. Apart from the opening two moves, one of which could be an interpretation of in-game actions, it's move-for-move a plausible duel between a waterbender with an ice specialization and an earthbender. (In canon, the only movement associated with Psynergy is a raised hand, like so: ) Slamming one's foot into the ground to make a pillar to launch an opponent into the air... sending out a shockwave in all directions... covering the floor of the arena with water, then freezing it by switching hands... both wrists forward to send a shower of ice shards... All clearly bending-derived, and somehow it perturbs me. It appears that I'm less willing to deal with other people's concept-crossovers than with my own.

But enough of that. Memetime!

Meme the first: Pick one or more of my icons, and ask me about it. I'll be willing to explain where I got it, why I like it, what it means, and so on.

Meme the second: Sort us! Tell me what Hogwarts house you think I, or one of my characters, best fits. Explanations encouraged.
kd7sov: (Felix)
And I know they'll appear,
For there are rules and there are strictures;
I believe the press release they gave
Way back in June,
And real soon
They'll release
Something more than just those pictures.
It won't be long now (I've said before)...
Day number two hundred twenty-four.

I know it's today.
I know it's today!

---

Well, not actually today. But close. It's not vaporware!

So, yes. Finally, finally, there's some news. As I... apparently didn't post back then, Golden Sun DS was announced at E3 2009. Since then there has been only very little information, all within the first week of June - the poster image of the three known protagonists, and that they're descendants of the prior GS people - and absolutely nothing else.

But now, Nintendo Power has apparently released their table of contents for the February 2010 issue, and GSDS is listed. Yes, it shares its page with two other games, but odds are, at this point, there'll be something. Names, dates, backstory... Something I can use to self-justify pre-ordering.

It's for things like this that I have three separate Golden Sun sites in my daily website check.

Rrrgh.

This? Is not so much a great day, for me. Or, really, a great week. Human idiocy dominates the radio news reports; I've got a final tomorrow that I'm likely to fail in a class I'm fairly sure I'll fail regardless of the final's score; no one will give me canonmates for Felix; my display is fairly broken; and it's cold outside. And now the ad by my posting window is being irritating.

Honestly, people. If you're going to like an idea, you should continue to like it after you're told that it comes from one or more members of another political party. Politics in the US is broken. Time to start over from scratch. No elephants, no donkeys, and no participation beyond personal voting from anyone previously involved above the city level.

Why do I need this Business Thought class? I don't care how my bosses make their decisions, or why. And no, Douglas McGregor, I don't have any ambition or self-direction to speak of. Point me in a direction, tell me how far to go and what to do there, and I'm fine. People are messy. Give me numbers - be they grammar-numbers, numbers-called-by-names, or ordinary unadorned numbers - and keep the psychology to yourself.
kd7sov: (Default)
As prompted by [livejournal.com profile] ceitfianna, the Words Meme. Comment with the word "words", and I'll give you five words to write about.

Here are the words I was given. This will likely get rather long. )
kd7sov: (Felix)
It's entirely possible some of you have been paying attention to what mid!Felix has been up to. The next time I bring him in, it will probably be from the Lamakan Desert, or immediately after. Said desert is canonically very hot. It's also described as "evil", but that doesn't seem to come to anything. Point is.

Felix is traveling with a group consisting of himself (a novice Earth Adept), his sister Jenna (a novice Fire Adept), Kraden (an old man with no elemental abilities), Alex (an experienced and creative Water Adept), Saturos, and Menardi (both experienced Fire Adepts). Those last two are from a people who are "supposed to be immune to the cold", which many fans take as implying they retain body heat very well. There's no canonical information about how they get through, merely a speculation - by a knowledgeable NPC, but still speculation - that Saturos and Menardi can use their abilities to "suppress the heat as they cross."

So. My question. Should I OOM this, and figure out some plausible way for that to work, or should I handwave it?
kd7sov: (brains)
So. On Friday, [livejournal.com profile] camwyn put up a DE of "what would have made your character turn out evil", so I sketched out a sequence of events leading up to evil!Felix, whom I think of as Apocalix (apocalyptic Felix - not strictly accurate, but I like the flow of it).

Fast-forward to last night. Something happened, I don't know what, but I now have Apocalix monologuing in my head.

What's actually really interesting is this: Baseline Felix would never monologue. He's not cut out for it. However, although bits and pieces of Apocalix's speech come from Alex, Zuko, Galbek Hills, Madblood, Muska, and so on, most of it is pure Felix. For instance, "I look to the prism, not the pebble" could easily be said in Zuko's voice patterns, but it's not the sort of metaphor he would think to use.
